Is Maddux Going to be a Sailer????

This week while Paityn and I are in Indiana, Maddux gets to stay with my mom and dad in Eugene...... :-)

On Saturday their next door neighbor; Miles Johnson took Maddux sailing at Fern Ridge (a manmade lake outside Eugene). All I heard from Maddux when I spoke to him was…..Mom, I want to go back sailing!!!! I got to go in a “tube”.

2010 USA/ASA Girls' Class A 12-Under Fast Pitch National Softball Tournament - Day #1 (Saturday)

Travel Day

While we were waiting to board the plane in Portland we had a nice surprise…..One of Paityn’s team member’s and her dad (one of the coach’s) showed up, they were also on our flight.

Paityn and I left Portland at 12:50 AM. We flew from Portland to Minneapolis, Minnesota. I thought that we would get plenty of sleep on the plane, but the plane was completely full…not one seat was open. Paityn was able to get a little sleep, but I didn’t get any. I was so tired……Once we arrived in Minneapolis we had a 3 ½ hour layover. Paityn and I walked around the airport for quite awhile to stay awake. Alyx ended up falling asleep on the chairs at our gate.

On the flight from Minneapolis to Cincinnati Paityn, Alyx, Rick, and I were all sitting in the same row. Paityn and I were on one side of the isle and Alyx and Rick wee on the other. We decided to put the girls on the isle seats so they could “chit chat”. I think I fell asleep before the plane took off and Paityn woke me up once we landed. The flight was only about 2 ½ hours long, but I slept the entire flight…..

We headed to the rental car place and off we went down the road driving to Bloomington, Indiana.

Once we arrived in Bloomington and checked into the hotel and I took a nap. Paityn went off running around and getting her bearings.

Paityn woke me from my nap and told me that it was time for dinner.

We (everyone that had arrived at the hotel) ended up going to Crackle Barrel. That is a local favorite and I heard it was a place to check out….I ended up having some fried okra and Paityn had chicken strips, surprise, surprise, surprise!!!!!

Once we came back to the hotel we all passed out for the night…..

Team BBQ at McNary High School

Tonight after practice the team had a BBQ for the families of the 12A Panther girls.

I was requested to bring “pasta salad”.

Last weekend I made a “pasta salad” that my sister-in-law made for me….it was so yummy that I decided to make it for Paul and I to eat during the weekend. I ended up taking some with me to the tournament and the girls devoured it in between games.

I thought I would make a double batch for the BBQ and by my surprise I didn’t take any back home with me….it was completely gone!!!

Team Recycling….

The last 3 days we have been in Salem with the team recycling.

The girls are going door-to-door to ask for any recycling people may want to donate to them.

Paityn and the rest of the girls on the team have raised a lot of money and are having fun….

All the money raised goes toward their trip to National’s in Indiana!!!!!

2010 12A Regional Tournament

The following weekend, the next tournament....Next on the list is the 12A Regional Tournament.

Regionals were originally suppoed to be in Springfield, Oregon but were moved to Portland due to the low number of teams. There ended up only 4 teams enterted into the 2010 12A Regional tournament.....Panthers, Blaze, Fever 97, and CC Elite.

One team missing was Northwest thunder...the team we ended up beating in the Championship game at State the previous weekend. The Panther's ended up picking-up two of there players to travel with us to Nationals. Pitcher - Shawna and Cather/1st baseman - Conner. They are both great girls and fit in well with the current Panther girls...

We started the tournament off with playing the Fever 97 and beat them 4-0, next we moved onto the Blaze (again) and beat them 10-8. We were done for the day and were scheduled to arrive again on Sunday at 9:00 AM for an 11:00 AM game. There were still games to be played to determine who was going to play us in the Championship game....

Surprise, surprise, surprise.....we played the Blaze AGAIN!!!

There was no time limit and we had to play 7 innings. We ended up beating the Blaze 12-8, but it took about 3 1/2 hours to complete the game.

By winning Regionals that also meant that we recieived a birth to the Hall of Fame Game the following year in Oklahoma City.

Panther Practice….

The other night at practice we had a “Parent’s meeting” after the girls had completed their practice. While we were all discussing the upcoming expenses (trading pins, Nationals, hotel, rental cars, team gifts, and other things) the girls went off and did their own thing…..

STATE!!!!

This tournament was the #2 Goal on The Panther’s list of 3 Goal’s for the 2010 Season….

#1 being quailed for National’s – which they completed that two weeks prior
#2 being to Win State
#3 being to finish “top 25” in the Nation at National’s.

The Willoughby family was especially looking forward to this weekend…The Orosco’s were driving up to visit us and Alissa had a tournament in Portland the following week.

The Panther’s first game was at 10:00 AM on Saturday. Our first game was against The Blaze….

I couldn’t believe when I saw our first game was against The Blaze. The Panther’s had only beaten them 1 time before and that was at the National Qualifier in Kent Washington. We had a tough bracket, but all the parents had “faith” in the girls…. We ended up winning that game 6-4, but that meant that we had the Fever 97 next. Paul unfortunately had to go to work so the Orosco’s, Paityn, Maddux, and I drove home. We had a nice BBQ lunch and were able to catch up. We headed back to Salem for the second game of the day which started at 4:00 PM. Fever 97didn’t give us much of a fight. We beat them 11-6 and that meant we moved to Sunday. If we would have lost we would have played at least 2 more games that evening to make it to Sunday.

Sunday we started off with the Northwest Thunder from Eugene. They are coached by Mike White who is also the head coach for the Oregon Ducks Women’s softball team. Personally I was a little scared for this game. They are a great team and play very well together. The Panther’s were down most of the game, but ended up pulling it out in the 6th inning and beating them 10-6. By winning that game that meant that we were automatically in the Championship game, so we would win and get first or lose and have another game to determine the winner. Of course we wanted to win outright and be done with it, but we had to wait to see how the cards fell to determine who we played. Once the games were completed…Blaze received 3rd place overall and that meant that Northwest Thunder was going to play us once again for the Championship!!!!

The girls really wanted this game….They came out on “fire” and didn’t let down at all. The final score was 9-4.

Panther’s Win STATE!!!!!!

National Qualifier in Redding. CA

The Panther girls were excited to travel to California for their next National Qualifier….

Even though The Panther’s have already qualified for National’s the team decided to travel to Redding and play. This would be the first time the team would face California teams the entire year and give them a warm up for National’s in August.

Paityn and I were excited because we would “hopefully” see Danny and Judy!!!

We left Friday morning and drove into Redding about 3:00 PM later that day. The drive went relatively quick and no major issues. We stopped a few times:
1. Eugene – to drop Maddux off at my mom and dad’s home.
2. Rice Hill – for a quick burger and ice cream
3. Ashland – gas
4. The Oregon/California border to take a couple photos

The temperature was about 40 degrees different from Newberg to Redding. First of all it was raining in the morning when we left and continued to rain all the way to the border. Once we were in California the sun was out and warmed up quickly. My thermometer kept raising in my car.

Saturday – The girls had a “first round bye” so we didn’t have to be at the fields until 9:00 AM. The girls ended up losing their first game to the Capital Comets 5-3. The second game started at 4:00 PM so we had lunch and were able to visit with Ava & Papa. We ended up winning the second game 9-1. Not bad, 1-1 for the day.

Sunday – We had a little earlier start….The girls had to be at the fields at 7:00 AM for a 9:00AM game. We played Gold Rush and beat them pretty easily. Now we had a game break to determine who we played next….and again we played Capital City Comets. We knew the girls could beat this team. The first game was a little rough and they made quite a few throwing errors. Once again they beat us, so that meant we were done for the day and ended up taking 3rd.
